BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP – Two familiar names to the Michigan golf scene will represent the state proudly at the 90th PGA Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club’s famed South course Aug. 4-10.
Grand Traverse Resort & Spa director of golf Scott Hebert and Crystal Mountain Resort director of golf Brad Dean both qualified for the season’s final major with impressive showings at the PGA Professional National Championships at Reynolds Plantation in Lake Oconee, Ga., in June.
Hebert, 39, captured his first national title June 22, with a final-round 4-under-par 68 for a 12-under-par 276 total and a one-shot win. Hebert, a six-time Michigan Open champion, is riding a high that could last all summer after winning the $75,000 first prize. He had to withdraw from the Michigan Open for the birth of a child. Now he gets to play in his second PGA Championship in his career.

Dean, who is more known for teaching players with pro potential than playing like one, was the surprise qualifier for his first major. He finished one shot out of a playoff with a 2-under-par total of 70-72-71-73—286. His trip to Oakland Hills will be hectic. His wife, Kendra, is expecting their fourth child that month. "There's no way I would be able to do any of this without such strong support from my family," Dean said. "We're very excited about the newest addition to the Dean clan and this latest opportunity is just icing on the cake. It's incredible."
