for the Upper Peninsula when discussing must-visit golf destinations. Already blessed by Mother Nature with unmatched beauty and ideal summer temperatures, the U.P. has added Sweetgrass Golf Club to an impressive list of courses that includes award-winning Marquette Greywalls and TimberStone.

While this trio of spectacular courses each boasts top-of-the-bell-curve quality and design, they can not be more different in style. Each course is craftily sculpted into its topography. The mountainous and tree-lined TimberStone takes golfers from one striking elevation change to another, while the glacial and granite outcroppings that define Greywalls will test the players nerves as much as their game. Sweetgrass, on the other hand, unfolds over undulating terrain and the windswept fairways are lined with waving fescue and namesake Sweetgrass – a sacred plant used in Indian peace and healing rituals.

Sweetgrass architect Paul Albanese worked with fellow Michigan designer Jerry Matthews on TimberStone and has a special feel for this rugged, yet pleasing topography; whether it’s gently taking a golfer up and down TimberStone’s mountainside or seamlessly introducing an island green and majestic waterfalls to Sweetgrass. Mike DeVries, who created Greywalls, used the same magical touch when weaving through the granite, culminating in an unspoiled view of Lake Superior.

The Island Resort & Casino – owned and operated by the Hannahville Band of the Potawatomi Nation and home to Sweetgrass – also serves as the launching pad for the “Perfect 4-Some” – a value-laden stay-and-play package offered in tandem with the nearby, acclaimed golf clubs. The Perfect 4-Some starts at $249 and includes three rounds of championship golf and two nights at the Island Resort & Casino. This is substantially less than golfers and guests would pay if they booked each separately. The three rounds can be played on any combination of the courses and the rates are based on double occupancy in the Island Resort.

Off the golf course, the resort welcomes national acts in the Island Showroom, while Club Four One nightclub and the Beachcomber Restaurant & Bar offer dining or drinking options. The resort’s Vegas-style gaming floor also was recently expanded.
